New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner made a candid admission after watching India complete a sensational record chase against his side. Following India’s dominant batting display, Santner conceded that even massive totals may not be enough anymore, saying, “Maybe 300 is needed these days.”

His remark summed up the growing challenge bowlers face against India’s deep and aggressive batting lineup, especially on good batting surfaces. Santner acknowledged that scores once considered competitive are now regularly being hunted down with ease.

India’s Batting Depth Leaves New Zealand Searching for Answers

India’s successful chase highlighted the sheer firepower in their lineup, with batters attacking relentlessly and maintaining control throughout the innings. Santner pointed out that totals in the range of 200–210 no longer provide security, particularly against a team that bats deep and adapts quickly to conditions.

Reflecting on the match, he noted, “It’s tough when they have that kind of depth and can keep attacking till the end.” The New Zealand skipper stressed that bowlers need to be braver with their plans and execute skills under pressure, as even small lapses are punished heavily by India’s batters.

Lessons for New Zealand as Series Progresses

Despite the defeat, Santner remained pragmatic and focused on the bigger picture. He emphasized the importance of learning quickly and finding better strategies to contain high-scoring teams like India. According to him, smarter bowling changes, tighter execution, and improved fielding are crucial if New Zealand hopes to stay competitive in the series.

Santner also reflected on his team’s batting effort, stating that their total was once considered strong, but modern T20 cricket has changed expectations. “Those scores used to be winning scores,” he said, highlighting how rapidly the game has evolved. As the series moves forward, New Zealand will aim to regroup, reassess their approach, and find ways to counter India’s fearless batting style.
