Pakistan U19 Accused of Net Run Rate Manipulation Ahead of Crucial India Clash

In a dramatic turn of events at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2026, Pakistan’s U19 side has come under fire for allegedly manipulating the outcome of their group-stage match against Zimbabwe. While chasing a small target of 129 runs, Pakistan reached 96 by the 16th over but then added only 27 runs over the next 10 overs.

This deliberate-looking slowdown raised eyebrows because it ensured that Zimbabwe advanced to the Super Six stage ahead of Scotland — a result that improved Pakistan’s own net run rate (NRR).

Under the tournament’s rules, teams carry over their NRR from the group stage into the Super Six only if they beat teams that also progress. Had Pakistan sealed the win quickly, Scotland — who lost to Pakistan earlier — would have qualified instead, meaning Pakistan’s NRR from that Scotland game would have carried forward. Slowing their chase effectively guaranteed that Pakistan carried a stronger NRR into the next phase.

Many supporters and commentators took to social media to voice their concerns. One fan tweeted, “Scenes in the Pakistan U19 game with NRR manipulation… now into the Super 6. Interesting to see how they implement the NRR manipulation laws for tactical advantages.” Another wrote, “Pakistan 19s currently committing a match-manipulation in breach of Art 2.11 of the ICC Code of Conduct — captain could (should) be banned for a couple of games, but that’s no consolation for Scotland 19s who are being penalized for being too competitive vs Pakistan.”

Rule Implications and ICC Code of Conduct

The heart of the controversy centers on Article 2.11 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which is meant to prevent teams from manipulating match situations for inappropriate strategic reasons. The article states that teams must not alter their play simply to influence standings in an ICC event — including artificial adjustments to run rates or bonus points.

While the rule does not extend to corrupt or fraudulent activities covered under anti-corruption codes, it does hold teams accountable for tactical decisions that unfairly affect other sides. Most significantly, the team captain is held responsible for any breach under this article, and sanctions — including match bans — can be applied.

Potential Disciplinary Action and Upcoming Clash

Pakistan’s tactic has thrust its captain Farhan Yousaf into the spotlight, with questions now swirling over whether the ICC will pursue formal disciplinary action. Observers are keenly watching how the governing body interprets intentional run rate strategy and whether this will set a precedent for future tournaments.

This controversy comes just before Pakistan’s highly anticipated Super Six match against India, adding even more intrigue to an already heated U19 World Cup campaign.
