Four-time and defending champions Perth Scorchers have suffered a massive blow as all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and England top order batter Phil Salt are ruled out of the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League.

Marsh had undergone ankle surgery recently and is ruled out for at least three months. He played a pivotal role for the franchise when they lifted the trophy in the previous edition.

Salt was included in the squad via the draft, which was held in August. He suffered a grade two ligament injury in the final ODI versus Australia and is yet to recover from it.

Perth Scorchers recently added former South African skipper Faf du Plessis to their squad as a replacement for Laurie Evans. Faf will be available for the first seven League games for the Scorchers.

“Losing Mitch and Phil so close to the start of the season is very disappointing” -Perth Scorchers manager

Scorchers General manager Kade Harvey said that the depth in their squad will rescue them and instil belief in the other players.

“Losing Mitch and Phil so close to the start of the season is very disappointing,” Perth Scorchers General Manager – High Performance, Kade Harvey, said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“Mitch is one of the best ball-strikers in global cricket with an incredible MBBL record, and his leadership and presence around the group is enormous.

“Phil has proven his class for England and in T20 tournaments around the world, so it’s unfortunate he won’t pull on the orange this summer. We’re under no illusions about how difficult it will be to cover the absence of Mitch and Phil, but we take pride in the depth of our squad and have a lot of players capable of stepping up,” concluded Harvey.
