Australia’s premier fast bowler Mitchell Starc is poised to etch his name deeper into cricketing history as he approaches the fifth and final Test of the Ashes at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The left-arm pacer is just six wickets away from becoming the most prolific left-arm bowler in Test cricket. Currently, that landmark belongs to Sri Lanka legend Rangana Herath, who finished his career with 433 wickets.

Starc, who has been Australia’s spearhead for more than a decade, enters the Sydney Test with 428 wickets from 104 matches, placing him firmly within touching distance of a record that underscores his longevity, skill, and impact in the longest format of the game.

Dominance Throughout the Ashes Series

The ongoing Ashes series has highlighted Starc’s enduring class and hunger for wickets. Across four Tests so far, he has claimed 26 wickets at an exceptional average of just over 17, making him the leading wicket-taker of the contest. His ability to generate pace, swing the ball at high speed, and produce decisive spells has repeatedly put England under pressure.

Starc’s influence has been reflected not just in numbers, but also in moments — he has already earned Player of the Match honours twice in the series, a testament to his match-winning contributions. At 35, he continues to thrive against top-quality opposition, showing no signs of slowing down even as workloads and fitness become crucial considerations late in a long career.

A Career Defined by Adaptability and Consistency

Since making his Test debut in 2011, Starc has evolved into one of Australia’s most reliable match-winners across conditions. Known for his lethal yorkers, late swing, and ability to strike with the new ball as well as reverse it with the old, he has collected 18 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket match performances.

The year 2025 has been particularly productive, with Starc taking more than 50 Test wickets at an outstanding average, reinforcing his value in red-ball cricket. His recent decision to step away from T20 internationals was aimed at prolonging his Test career, allowing him to focus on fitness and performance in the format that defines legacies.

As the Sydney Test approaches, all eyes will be on Starc — not just to see if Australia can finish the series strongly, but to witness a historic milestone that reflects years of excellence, resilience, and relentless competitiveness.
