Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc revealed that he didn’t notify T20I captain Mitchell Marsh or his longtime bowling partners Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins about his decision to retire from the format. The left-arm pacer announced his T20I retirement on September 3, ahead of Australia’s white-ball series against India and New Zealand.
Starc, who last represented Australia in the shortest format during the 2024 T20 World Cup, explained that the move was aimed at extending his career and concentrating on the longer formats and major tournaments. He ends his T20I career as Australia’s leading wicket-taking pacer and the second-highest overall, trailing only Adam Zampa.
Starc also mentioned that he informed the head coach about his decision first, and it was only after the announcement appeared on social media that Mitchell Marsh reached out to him.
“I did let them know, I did not ask them. I spoke to Ronnie (Andrew McDonald), and then told the two of them, I was done. Yeah, that was about it. I probably should have rang Mitchy (Mitchell Marsh). I felt bad because he texted me, and said he found out through Instagram. So, I felt bad about that one. Sorry, Mitchy. Didn’t tell the captain,” the pacer told cricket.com.au.
Australia have announced their squad for the upcoming away series against New Zealand. Following the recent retirement of a key pacer, the Men in Yellow have brought in left-arm bowler Ben Dwarshuis as a direct replacement, with Xavier Bartlett and Sean Abbott also included as additional options.

The left-arm pacer was a key player for the T20I side, renowned for his effectiveness at both the start and end of the innings. Known as one of the best exponents of the new ball, he consistently troubled batsmen with his swing, often providing his team with a strong advantage in his opening spells.
Mitchell Starc claimed 79 wickets at an average of 23.86, maintaining an economy rate of 7.76. He was also a member of the Australian squad that lifted the 2021 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Aaron Finch.
