Mohammed Shami’s performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been nothing short of extraordinary. Leading India’s bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami delivered a spectacular five-wicket haul against Bangladesh in their opening match, reaffirming his top form.
His early breakthroughs left Bangladesh struggling at 35/5, setting the tone for India’s dominant victory. India vice-captain Shubman Gill was full of praise, highlighting Shami’s consistency in ICC tournaments, where he has repeatedly delivered match-winning spells. With the high-voltage India-Pakistan clash next, all eyes will be on Shami to maintain his brilliant form.
The Struggles Behind the Success
Despite his current form, Shami’s journey back to the field was far from easy. The highest wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup, he faced a prolonged injury that required surgery and rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). During this period, he worked relentlessly on his fitness, shedding nine kilograms to regain peak physical condition.
Speaking to former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, Shami revealed his disciplined approach to diet and training. He follows an intermittent fasting routine, consuming just one meal a day since 2015, with biryani serving as an occasional cheat meal. His unwavering dedication to fitness played a key role in his successful comeback.
Breaking Records and Cementing His Legacy
Shami’s recent performance also saw him etch his name in the record books. With five five-wicket hauls in ICC ODI tournaments, he now surpasses Australian greats Glenn McGrath and Mitchell Starc. Additionally, he became the fastest Indian and the third-fastest overall to claim 200 ODI wickets, achieving the milestone in just 5,126 balls. His remarkable comeback from injury, coupled with these incredible records, cements his legacy as one of India’s greatest fast bowlers. As the tournament progresses, Shami’s impact will be crucial in India’s quest for glory.
