Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is gearing up for his captaincy debut for the Indian team in the Test format. He will be leading the side in the fifth Test match, starting on July 1, at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Bumrah was given the responsibility by the Indian team after Rohit Sharma got ruled out of the match. Ahead of his captaincy debut, the pacer is drawing inspiration from the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

The former Indian wicket-keeper batter had never led any team before he got the Indian team captaincy. On the eve of the fifth Test match, Bumrah expressed that despite Dhoni’s inexperience, he went on to become one of the most successful skippers. The pacer added that his focus is to help the team achieve the goal, and not on other things.

“I remember speaking to MS (Dhoni), and he told me that he never captained any side before he led India for the first time. Now, he is remembered as one of the most successful captains of all time. So, I am focusing on how I can help the team and not focusing on what I have done before or how the cricketing conventions or the rules have been set,” said Jasprit Bumrah.

I have had immense faith in myself: Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah also spoke about the unavailability of Rohit Sharma. The right-handed batter was the leading run-scorer for Indian last year in England. The pacer expressed that Rohit Sharma will be missed in the fifth Test match against England.

Jasprit Bumrah will become the 36th player and the first bowler since Kapil Dev to lead India in Test cricket. He expressed that leading the team is his biggest achievement as a cricketer. Bumrah stated that he has immense faith in his ability and will trust his instincts as a leader.

“Representing India in Tests was always a dream for me and this opportunity to lead the side is the biggest achievement of my career. I’m very happy that I’ve been given this opportunity. I have had immense faith in myself. In every scenario, I have trusted the instincts that have taken me to this level in cricket and I will keep doing that, going forward. Nothing changes for me, especially my role. That’s what I am going to do as the captain of the side,” he said.
