Mumbai Indians Star Shares Witty Insight On Team’s Prospects For IPL 2025

Senior Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Suryakumar Yadav expressed confidence that the franchise could have a remarkable season in IPL 2025. When asked about MI’s prospects for the upcoming tournament, he amusingly pointed out that 2025 is an odd year—a pattern that has historically favored the team.

Notably, MI secured four of their five IPL titles in odd years (2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019), with the sequence only breaking in 2020. Under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, MI endured a disappointing IPL 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the points table with just four wins from 14 matches.

Despite the setback, the franchise has retained Pandya as captain for the upcoming season. Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Suryakumar voiced his belief that MI could deliver a strong performance in IPL 2025. As quoted by PTI, he stated:

“It’s odd year (2025), emotions are high, half of boys have reached there for training. I feel it will be a special year.”

Mumbai Indians secured all five of their IPL titles with Rohit Sharma as captain. However, after failing to clinch another championship following their 2020 victory, Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the team’s skipper.

Interestingly, while MI struggled under Pandya’s leadership in IPL 2024 and failed to reach the playoffs, the all-rounder played a crucial role in India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup, where Rohit led the team.

Suryakumar Yadav’s performance for Mumbai Indians

Suryakumar Yadav is Mumbai Indians’ third-highest run-scorer in franchise history. He has played 98 matches for MI, amassing 3,033 runs at an average of 35.26 and a strike rate of 148.09, including two centuries and 23 half-centuries. Only Rohit Sharma (5,731) and Kieron Pollard (3,915) have scored more runs for the team.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Mumbai Indians retained five key players. Alongside Suryakumar (₹16.35 crore), they kept Hardik Pandya (₹16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (₹16.30 crore), Jasprit Bumrah (₹18 crore), and Tilak Varma (₹8 crore). The franchise then acquired 18 players in the auction, later replacing the injured Lizaad Williams with Corbin Bosch.

Led by Pandya, MI will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign with a high-profile clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23. The two teams will meet again at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 20.
