Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has finally opened up on his iconic No. 7 jersey, the number he has donned all his life across all formats of the game.

He has made no. 7 very iconic with his cricketing achievements. Previously, the number 7 jersey used to have a big relevance in football only with players like David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo donning it, but Dhoni has brought it down to cricket also.

The celebrated cricketer has asserted that there is nothing superstitious about the jersey number. However, MS Dhoni stated he chose the number due to his date of birth.

“A lot of people initially thought that 7 is a lucky number for me and all of that. But I chose the number for a very simple reason. I was born on the 7th of July. So it’s the 7th day of the 7th month, that was the reason,” MS Dhoni said during a virtual interaction held by India Cements.

MS Dhoni further added that several people have asked him about the story behind his jersey number and he kept adding versions to it.

“Rather than getting to all the different things as to what number is a good number and all, I thought I will use my date of birth as the number. Then whenever people kept asking me, I kept adding to the answer. 81 was the year, 8-1 is again 7, 7 is a very neutral number. People actually kept telling me, I started absorbing it and I started telling it to others in the same way,” he added.

MS Dhoni prepares for IPL 2022 in full swing

The former Indian captain has began his preparations for the 15th edition of the cash-rich league. He joined the camp in Surat from day 1 along with young Indian cricketers and has been seen grinding it out in the training.

MS Dhoni, who announced retirement from international cricket in 2020, didn’t had a great season last year with the bat. He managed only 114 runs in 16 matches at an average of 16.28 with the highest score of 18.

The veteran wicket-keeper is desperate to hit the strides in IPL 2022 and CSK look to defend the title and equal Mumbai Indians’ tally of 5 IPL trophies.
