In a major development that brings geopolitics back into the cricketing spotlight, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has officially confirmed that the Pakistan women’s cricket team will not travel to India for the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. Instead, their matches will be held at a neutral venue following the hybrid model that was previously accepted by the ICC. This move echoes India’s stance during the ICC Champions Trophy, where they refused to travel to Pakistan.
Background and Context
Cricket between India and Pakistan is never just about the sport—it’s often a reflection of the diplomatic relations between the two nations. Over the years, political tensions have led to the cancellation or relocation of several bilateral and international fixtures.
Most recently, when Pakistan hosted the ICC Champions Trophy, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) refused to send their team across the border. As a workaround, the matches involving India were played in Dubai, setting a precedent for what we now call the “hybrid model.”
PCB’s Decision on Women’s World Cup Participation
Speaking to the media, Mohsin Naqvi made it clear: “Just like India didn’t play in Pakistan in the Champions Trophy and were allowed to play at a neutral venue, whatever venue is decided, we will play. When there is an agreement, it has to be adhered to.”
If India could opt out of visiting Pakistan, then Pakistan should be granted the same option. The ICC will be responsible for selecting the neutral venue. Although no official announcement has been made, likely candidates include the UAE, Sri Lanka, or even Malaysia—locations that have successfully hosted international fixtures in the past. This decision also ensures minimal disruption to the tournament’s integrity while respecting the political climate.
India Hosting the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup
Set to take place from September 29 to October 26, the Women’s World Cup will be one of the most anticipated cricketing events of the year. India, as the host, will aim to deliver a spectacle both on and off the pitch. With Australia entering as defending champions, the tournament promises high-stakes matches and thrilling cricket action.
Pakistan Women’s Team Qualification Journey
The women in green put up a stellar show during the qualifiers held in Lahore, winning all five of their matches. They defeated strong contenders like Ireland, Scotland, West Indies, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The team’s unity, strategy, and execution were truly impressive—and their results speak volumes. Playing at home gave Pakistan a massive boost. The supportive crowd, familiar pitch conditions, and national pride fueled their momentum.
PCB chairman added, “The team showed how to take home advantage and play like a collective unit. I am happy that women’s cricket is doing well now.”
Several players stood out with bat and ball, but it was the team’s cohesion that made all the difference. From solid opening partnerships to tight bowling spells, every department clicked. The synergy between experienced players and young talent was evident throughout the qualifiers.
