Mohsin Naqvi Silent on Pakistan’s Tri-Series Proposal with India

The recent proposal by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a tri-series involving India at a neutral venue has drawn significant attention amidst ongoing negotiations surrounding the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has refrained from delving into specifics, citing the importance of preserving Pakistan’s stance. This situation highlights the intricate dynamics at play between cricket’s governing bodies, governments, and stakeholders.

Pakistan’s Proposal for a Tri-Series

The PCB recently suggested a tri-series featuring India at a neutral venue as a potential step towards resolving tensions in cricketing ties. However, this idea, aimed at bridging gaps, hasn’t gained traction, reflecting the longstanding complexities of Indo-Pak cricketing relations.

“I prefer not to delve into specifics at this time, as preserving our position is critical. Pakistan is playing a constructive role in the process and will continue to do so,” Naqvi said in Urdu when specifically asked whether the PCB requested for a tri-series involving India.

The crux of the issue lies in India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. This led the PCB to propose a hybrid hosting model. However, the BCCI’s steadfast position has turned this into a potential crisis, with broader ramifications for global cricket.

Chairman Naqvi’s meeting with PM Shehbaz Sharif signifies the influence of political dynamics on sporting decisions. Involving the government aligns with PCB’s commitment to consulting national leadership before agreeing to terms with the ICC.

The ICC’s Role

The ICC has proposed a hybrid model, where matches involving India could be played in the UAE. This approach, though practical, faces resistance from the PCB, which insists on applying the same model to future ICC events hosted by India. India is set to host four global tournaments by 2031. The PCB has pointed out the need for consistent hosting models, urging the ICC to ensure fairness in handling these arrangements.

With the Champions Trophy just months away, the urgency to resolve this issue cannot be overstated. Delays could disrupt the tournament, impacting fans, sponsors, and players. Should the impasse persist, the ICC may have to make a decisive call, potentially sidelining one of the parties or finding a middle ground acceptable to both.

“At this stage, I cannot comment further. There was a meeting on Saturday (December 7) and it was postponed. Once the ICC approves the decisions, we will provide all the details. Rest assured, we are doing our best to achieve an outcome that serves the best interests of Pakistan and international cricket. However, the final decision lies with the ICC.”
