“Put The Last Two Weeks Behind”: Morkel’s Tough Message To Team India

Morne Morkel

As India prepares to face South Africa in a three-match ODI series, assistant coach Morne Morkel stressed the importance of mentally resetting after the tough Test losses. India, which endured a 0-2 series defeat, now needs to shift gears quickly as they step into the white-ball format. Morkel acknowledged that the past fortnight had been challenging for the team, but he emphasised that the coaching staff and players have taken the time to process what went wrong.

According to him, the immediate task is to regain clarity and direction before stepping into the first ODI on Sunday. Reflecting on the setback, he said, “It was a disappointing two weeks for us, but we’ve had a couple of days now to reflect.” Morkel highlighted that transitioning from the longer format to limited-overs cricket is never simple, especially after a demoralising defeat, but insisted that the team is fully committed to adjusting its mindset.

Proteas’ Confidence A Key Threat

Morkel also pointed out that South Africa entered the ODI series in high spirits following their Test success. Their momentum, he suggested, makes them a formidable challenge for India. Shifting formats often brings a fresh atmosphere, yet Morkel warned that a team riding on confidence can be especially dangerous.

As he put it, “A change into coloured clothing and a change of ball brings different energy. But South Africa has momentum, and a confident Protea side is dangerous.” With the Proteas arriving with belief and rhythm, Morkel believes India must approach the opening match with intensity and purpose. He stressed that beginning the ODI campaign on a strong note will be crucial to regaining control of the series narrative and ensuring the team does not carry the weight of recent results into the upcoming fixtures.

Focus On Resetting And Rebuilding Momentum

Looking ahead, Morne Morkel underlined the importance of resetting emotionally and strategically. He stated that the next two weeks provide an opportunity for India to rebuild momentum, refine their white-ball strategies, and put the disappointment of the Test series behind them. The coaching group is aware of the psychological demands of bouncing back but remains confident that the players are eager to respond with resilience.

Morkel reinforced the need for a positive start, adding, “For us, it’s important to start well over the next week or two and put the last couple of weeks behind us.” As India turns its attention to ODIs, the emphasis will be on clarity, composure, and capitalising on the change in format to stage a revival against a spirited South African side.
