Rahane Recalled, Thakur Sent Back; Umpires’ Decision Sparks Debate

Umpiring standards in domestic cricket were under scrutiny during the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy match. In a rare incident, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane was recalled by umpires five minutes after being dismissed. The third umpire revealed bowler Umar Nazir had overstepped.

The incident occurred in the 25th over of Mumbai’s second innings on day two. Nazir bowled a short delivery, catching Rahane off guard, resulting in a glove to the keeper. Rahane returned to the dressing room, and Shardul Thakur walked out to bat, but the umpires were still reviewing the no-ball, sparking the drama.

The replays took some time to load, but once the third umpire confirmed that Nazir had overstepped, the on-field umpires sent Shardul Thakur back and recalled Rahane to the crease. Upon Rahane’s return, the umpires explained that they had asked him to wait due to the no-ball review, but he hadn’t heard them.

According to the laws of the game, “An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batter.”

“A batter may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery, unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field.”

Paras Dogra’s Stunning One-Handed Catch Dismisses Rahane

Rahane was dismissed in Nazir’s next over through a brilliant catch by J&K captain Paras Dogra at mid-off. Nazir bowled a full delivery outside off, prompting Rahane to go for an uppish drive. Dogra moved swiftly to his left and executed a stunning one-handed catch.

Before Rahane’s dismissal, umpiring controversies arose. Shreyas Iyer was initially given not out despite appearing to nick the ball to the keeper but was dismissed four overs later, prompting complaints about the catch’s legitimacy.

Rahane, at the non-striker’s end, was also seen discussing the matter with the umpires. Meanwhile, J&K tightened their grip on the match by dismantling Mumbai’s renowned batting line-up. Key players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Rahane, and Shivam Dube failed to make notable contributions.
