Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave his all to help Afghanistan win their T20 World Cup 2026 match against South Africa, but it wasn’t enough in the end. Chasing 188 runs in their Group D match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 11), Gurbaz played a brilliant knock of 84 runs off just 42 balls.
In the second Super Over, he smashed three consecutive sixes off Keshav Maharaj to keep Afghanistan’s hopes alive. However, he was dismissed on the final ball of the second Super Over, and Afghanistan missed out on a memorable win.
A few hours after the heartbreaking loss at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Gurbaz shared a collage of photos on Instagram showing his disappointment. In an emotional caption, he wrote that the team gave everything and fought until the very last moment, but it simply wasn’t their day.
“Every match teaches us something. Today, we gave everything we had and fought till the very last moment, but it wasn’t our day. Still, your love and support mean more to us than words can say. We’re grateful for each one of you who stands with us through every high and low. We’ll learn, improve, and come back stronger than ever. Together, always”, Gurbaz captioned the Instagram post.
Gurbaz Shines As Afghanistan Lose In Super Over
Rahmanullah Gurbaz produced a fighting knock to try and guide Afghanistan past South Africa and keep their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign alive. However, even his valiant effort was not enough to prevent defeat.
The defeat in the second Super Over in Ahmedabad has pushed Afghanistan closer to being knocked out of the tournament. They are still technically in the race for a place in the Super 8s, but their future is no longer in their own hands.
To qualify, Afghanistan must win their remaining two Group D matches against the United Arab Emirates and Canada by big margins. At the same time, they also need either South Africa or New Zealand to lose both of their remaining matches, which looks unlikely.
