R. Ashwin is presenting a most intriguing argument here. Its crux is about some technicalities in the batting technique of Shubman Gill, which in a particular condition might become his weakness. It chiefly focuses on the bottom-hand grip of Gill, which, while being a strength in several cases, may some times provide him with limited shot options and expose him to getting out.

Ashwin cites two pictures as examples to nail his point home. The first part of the photograph talks about Gill’s bottom-hand grip, which Ashwin singles out as the critical area of the study. The second shows the trajectory of the ball with the corresponding angle of Gill’s batting regarding how this gives rise to loss of control and increases chances of getting out.

As per Ashwin, Gill will not be able to swing the bat towards the third man because of the grip of this lower hand, which has kept the back face of the bat exactly in that plane and totally squashes many options in shots. Besides, even when the ball pitches with the difference in speed and bounces, that lower hand simply does not rotate enough, and thus most of the time one lacks it in power and variety of shots.

However, Ashwin also mentions how this technical flaw would be exposed clearly on slower surfaces or to bowlers of varied pace and seam movements. Yet Ashwin credits Gill’s strength and talent as a batsman to offset this chink in armor.

Summing up, Ashwin’s analysis really goes beyond centering on the batting technique of Gill; it sheds light on both strengths and weaknesses. As rightly put by Ashwin, “knowing Shubman Gill and the player he has the skill and talent, I really wish and hope that he strides along and corrects and learns every game and starts becoming that super player that India needs.
