Indian skipper Rohit Sharma indirectly opined on a potential return to the T20I squad for the T20 World Cup set to take place in West Indies and USA in June 2024. After the T20 World Cup last year, it appears that the Indian selectors have shifted their focus away from experienced players like Rohit and Virat Kohli in the shortest format.

Both players have not been included in any T20I squads since the event, and instead, Hardik Pandya has been leading the revamped Men in Blue. During the inauguration of CricKingdom Academy in the USA, Rohit Sharma suggested that he could potentially have a slim opportunity to participate in the T20 World Cup next year.

He said: “More than just going and enjoying, there is another reason to come here (in the USA). Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, there will be the T20 World Cup (2024) happening in this part of the world. So, I’m pretty sure everyone is excited. So yaa, we look forward to that.”

Rohit Sharma also expressed the significance of India clinching ICC events and ending the decade-long dry spell. He added:

“ICC tournaments are the ones you need to win, we will try our best like any other year to have the best chance to win the trophy for India.”

Rohit Sharma provides an injury update regarding Shreyas Iyer

India’s hopes of securing victory in the ODI World Cup heavily depend on their middle order, with KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who are currently sidelined due to injuries. Iyer has been a remarkably reliable presence at No.4 for India in the middle order, and there are speculations about his chances of featuring in the World Cup being uncertain.

Nonetheless, Rohit Sharma asserted that Iyer’s recovery is progressing well, and the team remains optimistic about his swift return as a key batsman.

He added: “Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup.”

Rohit Sharma’s next appearance for India is scheduled in the Asia Cup 2023, where they will take on Pakistan in Kandy on September 2.
