Shreyas Iyer is likely to make a strong return to the Indian cricket team across formats after missing out on the England tour earlier this year. With the Asia Cup 2025 around the corner and a Test series against the West Indies scheduled later in the year, selectors are considering bringing him back into both the T20I and Test squads.
The seasoned Mumbai batter is reportedly being eyed for a crucial middle-order role in both tournaments. The Asia Cup 2025, set to begin on September 9 in the UAE, will be played in the T20 format, with the BCCI expected to announce the squad soon.
Currently involved in the ODI setup, Iyer is under consideration for a broader role to bolster India’s batting lineup ahead of a busy calendar. His solid technique and composure, especially at No. 4, make him a valuable asset, particularly in handling spin-friendly conditions.
His potential return is seen as a solution to India’s ongoing middle-order concerns. India will host the West Indies for a two-Test series starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by another Test series against South Africa. As reported by the Times of India, a source stated:
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something that we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four tests—two each against the West Indies and South Africa.”
Shreyas Iyer Eyes Test Comeback, Begins With Duleep Trophy
Shreyas Iyer has been included in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, set to take place at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence from August 28. As the reigning champions, West Zone will begin their campaign directly from the semifinals on September 4.
Iyer last featured in Test cricket in February of the previous year, before a combination of poor form and a back injury led to his exclusion during the home series against England. His reluctance to participate in domestic matches also resulted in the loss of his BCCI central contract.
Since then, however, Iyer has been working diligently to reclaim his place. He played a key role in India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in the UAE, finishing as the team’s leading run-scorer.
