Shreyas Iyer’s Parents Seek Urgent Visas To Join Him In Sydney

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in Sydney following a serious injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding, which resulted in a laceration to his spleen.

He was immediately taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, where scans revealed the full extent of the injury. The BCCI’s official statement noted that Iyer is currently stable, under observation, and responding positively to treatment. Concerned for his well-being, Iyer’s parents have sought urgent visas to travel to Sydney and be by his side as he continues his recovery.

BCCI Monitoring Recovery Closely

The BCCI has assured fans that Iyer’s condition is being carefully monitored by its medical team, in consultation with specialists in both India and Sydney. The team doctor will remain in Australia to oversee Iyer’s daily progress and ensure that his treatment proceeds smoothly. The incident occurred when Iyer attempted a catch off Harshit Rana’s delivery and landed awkwardly on his left side.

Though he managed to complete the catch, he was seen clutching his ribs in pain and needed medical assistance to leave the field. This unfortunate injury comes at a crucial time, as Iyer’s availability for the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30, now looks doubtful. The selectors and fans alike are hoping for a quick recovery, given his importance in India’s middle order alongside KL Rahul and Axar Patel.

A Key Performer In Peak Form

Shreyas Iyer’s injury is a significant setback for Team India, as he has been in exceptional form this year. In the ongoing series against Australia, he accumulated 72 runs in two innings, including a well-crafted 61 off 77 balls in Adelaide, where his partnership with captain Rohit Sharma proved vital.

Across 11 matches this year, Iyer has scored 496 runs at an impressive average of 49.60 and a strike rate nearing 90, with five half-centuries and a top score of 79. His consistency has been a cornerstone of India’s success, particularly during the ICC Champions Trophy, where he was the team’s top scorer with 243 runs in five innings, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest overall run-getter. His absence, if prolonged, would undoubtedly be felt as India continues its preparations for upcoming international assignments.
