Prithvi Shaw, once regarded as a future legend in Indian cricket, has faced a dramatic career downturn. The young batter, who was once compared to Sachin Tendulkar, has played only a handful of matches for India across formats.
His exclusion from the Mumbai squad for the Vijay Hazare and Ranji Trophy, coupled with going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, has raised questions about his career trajectory. Punjab Kings star Shashank Singh, who has played alongside Shaw in Mumbai, has shared insights into what might be holding him back.
Shashank Singh’s Advice for Shaw
During an appearance on the Shubhankar Mishra Podcast, Shashank Singh addressed Shaw’s struggles and suggested areas for improvement. He acknowledged Shaw’s talent and potential, but pointed out that a change in work ethic could be crucial for his revival. “Prithvi Shaw is underrated. If he goes back to his basics, he can achieve anything,” Shashank remarked.
He recommended small but significant lifestyle adjustments, such as sleeping earlier and maintaining a better diet. “Maybe he can sleep at 10 PM instead of 11 PM, maybe improve his diet,” he added, emphasizing that such changes could benefit both Shaw and Indian cricket. However, Shashank also noted that Shaw likely has experienced mentors guiding him, making external advice unnecessary.
Shashank’s Rise and IPL Success
While Shaw’s career is at a crossroads, Shashank Singh has experienced a breakthrough. After an impressive season with Punjab Kings, where he scored 354 runs at a strike rate of nearly 165, Shashank became PBKS’ first retention ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹5.5 crore.
His rising popularity was evident when he ranked as the ninth-most searched athlete on Google in 2024, alongside Hardik Pandya as the only other Indian in the top 10. Now set to play under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, Shashank is focused on helping PBKS secure their maiden IPL title.
Meanwhile, Shaw recently captained the ‘Route Mobile’ team in the DY Patil T20 tournament but remains on the sidelines of top-level cricket. Whether he can make a comeback will depend on his willingness to adapt and improve.
