Sri Lanka has appointed Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistani cricketer, as their fast-bowling coach until the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in June 2024. Aaqib, renowned for his role in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory, currently serves as the Director of Cricket Operations and head coach at Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Ashley De Silva, expressed enthusiasm about Aaqib’s appointment, citing his extensive international experience as both a player and coach. De Silva believes Aaqib’s expertise will be instrumental in preparing Sri Lanka’s bowlers for upcoming major tournaments, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Aaqib, 51 years old, boasts an impressive coaching resume, having previously worked with cricketing nations such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the UAE. During his tenure with the UAE national team, he achieved notable milestones, including securing ODI and T20I status and guiding the team to qualification for the 2015 50-over World Cup.

Aaqib also played a pivotal role as the bowling coach for Pakistan during their victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup in 2009. In addition to his coaching prowess, Aaqib enjoyed a successful playing career as a right-arm seamer for Pakistan.

He was an essential part of Pakistan’s bowling attack in the 1990s, providing valuable support to legendary bowlers like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Across formats, Aaqib amassed an impressive total of 236 international wickets, featuring in 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan.

The appointment of Aaqib Javed underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing their fast-bowling department ahead of crucial international competitions. With his wealth of experience and proven track record, Aaqib is poised to make a significant impact on Sri Lanka’s cricketing aspirations, guiding their bowlers towards success on the global stage.
