India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav took to social media on Monday, March 10, to express a heartfelt message for head coach Gautam Gambhir. His tribute followed India’s triumph over New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, held on Sunday, March 9, at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE.
Batting first, New Zealand set a target of 251 in 50 overs, with key contributions from Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53*). In response, skipper Rohit Sharma led the chase with a brilliant 76 off 83 balls, supported by Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29). KL Rahul’s unbeaten 34 guided India to a six-wicket victory with an over to spare.
Amid India’s celebrations, Suryakumar shared an emotional note for coach Gambhir on his Instagram Stories, writing:
“Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, you have always loved taking those difficult roads. Congratulations Gauti bhai.”
Since replacing Rahul Dravid in July 2024, Gautam Gambhir faced criticism for India’s struggles in ODIs and Tests, including a series loss to Sri Lanka and a 3-0 home whitewash against New Zealand.
India also failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, losing 3-1 in Australia. However, 2025 has been a turning point in ODIs, with India sweeping England 3-0 and clinching the 2025 Champions Trophy.
