Team India Pace Bowler Released From Squad After Leeds Test Debacle

The Indian team management has decided to send young fast bowler Harshit Rana back home after the five-wicket loss to England in the first Test at Leeds. Added only as injury cover, the 23-year-old did not take the field at Headingley and has now been dropped from the travelling party.

A senior BCCI official confirmed the move, saying, “Harshit Rana has been released from the squad. He hasn’t travelled with the Indian squad to Birmingham for the second Test starting July 4,” thereby ending his brief stint on tour.

Rana earned his original call-up on the strength of two modest Tests in Australia and a handful of India A appearances, yet his recent outing against England Lions in Canterbury—27 overs for 99 runs and a single wicket—did little to strengthen his case.

Why the Gambhir Protégé Missed Out

Rana rose quickly under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, especially after his eye-catching off-cutter that dismissed Travis Head in Perth. Despite that flash of brilliance, selectors gradually realised he is still a work in progress for high-level red-ball cricket.

Conditions in England demand consistent seam movement and discipline—qualities that more seasoned bowlers like Mukesh Kumar or Anshul Kamboj possess in greater measure.

Many observers were puzzled that Harshit Rana, whose hit-the-deck style suits harder Australian pitches, was retained as the lone back-up seamer for a swing-friendly English summer. Even within the team, doubts surfaced about whether his pace would trouble established Test batters on green, seaming wickets.

Next Steps Before the Second Test

With the series now shifting to Birmingham for the match starting on 4 July, the selectors must quickly decide who will replace Rana in the squad.

Gambhir admitted the issue remains unresolved, explaining, “Harshit Rana, I will discuss with chairman of selectors. He was held back because of some niggles… everything is fine. I will discuss, and we will then take that call,” indicating that fitness and form data will guide their next move.

The think-tank could recall Mukesh Kumar, renowned for his control, or turn to Anshul Kamboj, who generates late swing. Either way, India want a bowler ready to deliver immediately, for the humiliating defeat at Leeds exposed gaps in their attack.

Rana’s release serves as a reminder that potential alone cannot guarantee a Test berth; proven skill in specific conditions is essential for success on an exacting English tour.
