Sourav Ganguly Eyes Comeback To Indian Team As Head Coach

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has not ruled out the chance of becoming the coach of the Indian men’s team. After trying different roles like commentator and BCCI president, Ganguly said he is open to taking up the coaching job in the future.

“I never really thought about it because I got into different roles,” Ganguly told PTI.  “I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President. We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50 (53), so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes.”

Sourav Ganguly, who worked as Team Director for Delhi Capitals between 2018–19 and 2022–24, said his biggest contribution in cricket administration was in promoting women’s cricket.

“I took up many roles, but I feel the most important was supporting women’s cricket,” he said.

While he is still open to coaching Team India in the future, Ganguly was clear about one thing—he has no interest in politics. When asked if he would join a political party before the 2026 West Bengal elections, he simply said:

“I am not interested.” Even when asked if he’d consider it if offered the Chief Minister’s post, Ganguly smiled and repeated, “I am not interested.”

Sourav Ganguly Backs Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly offered a balanced endorsement of Gautam Gambhir, who took over as head coach after Rahul Dravid earlier this year. “Gautam is doing well,” Ganguly noted.

“He had a slow start with losses to Australia and New Zealand, but made progress during the Champions Trophy. The upcoming England series will be a major test.”

When asked about Gambhir’s tactical skills, Ganguly responded, “I haven’t seen him closely in this coaching role, so I can’t fully comment on his strategies. But I do know he’s extremely passionate about the game.”

Ganguly described Gambhir as honest, transparent, and passionate, noting the same respect and intensity in his coaching that he showed as a player. Ganguly concluded with a message of support:

“He’s only been in the role for a year. The England tour will be crucial. He had a few challenges in Australia, but like everyone else, he’ll learn and improve with time.”
