Kargil War India players

Team India players marked the occasion of India’s victory in the Kargil War by paying homage to the soldiers who gave their lives for the sake of the nation. Every year, July 26 is celebrated as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate the aforementioned soldiers.

The soldiers from Pakistan had captured several peaks in Kargil. Brave Indian troops managed to push them back out, several of whom belonged to the Northern Light Infantry of Pakistan. The war lasted for more than two months, costing lives in the camps of both countries.

Following the invasion, the Indian government sent 200,000 soldiers in response termed ‘Operation Vijay’. The Kargil war ended when the Pakistani soldiers were successfully shoved out of the country. There were as many as 527 fatalities on the Indian side.

Pakistan went on to deny involvement in the confrontations, citing Kashmiri rebel forces were at the forefront. However, certain documents were found which confirmed the presence of Pakistan’s paramilitary troops in Kargil.

The victory was declared on July 26, 1999. In memory of the fallen soldiers, India celebrates the date as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’. The Prime Minister of India pays his respects on the day at Amar Jawan Jyothi in New Delhi every year.

Team India players paid their tributes on the day to mark the heroic acts of the Indian Armer Forces in the Kargil War. Several players including Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane saluted the martyrs.
