Former India captain and current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni humorously explained his choice of the No. 7 jersey, stating that it corresponds to the day his parents decided he would be born on Earth, making it an easy decision for him. The No. 7 jersey has become iconic for Dhoni, who led India to World Cup victories in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI).
In recognition of his significant contributions to Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) retired the No. 7 jersey in December 2023. During a recent event, the host prompted Dhoni to reveal the story behind his choice of the number seven jersey. Renowned for his clever responses, the Indian cricket legend, speaking at a promotional event for Single.ID, explained:
“That is the time or day my parents decided I would come on earth. So, I was born on the 7th Of July. So July again the seventh month. 81 was the year so 8-1=7. So it was very easy for me to go out there when they asked me, ‘okay, what number do you want’.”
Dhoni is recognized as one of the finest limited-overs cricketers in the sport’s history. Hailing from Ranchi, the wicketkeeper-batsman initially gained prominence for his impressive power-hitting but later solidified his reputation as one of the greatest finishers ever. The 42-year-old participated in 350 ODIs for India, accumulating 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57 and a strike rate of 87.56.
His ODI contributions include 10 centuries and 73 fifties. MS Dhoni also represented India in 90 Tests and 98 T20Is, scoring 4,876 and 1,617 runs, respectively. He served as the captain when India clinched their last ICC trophy – the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.
MS Dhoni was seen using a bat featuring the sticker of his childhood friend’s sports shop
In a recent viral image on social media, the ex-India captain was spotted training with a bat showcasing the sticker of his childhood friend Paramjit Singh’s sports shop, ‘Prime Sports.’ Paramjit Singh played a crucial role in securing one of Dhoni’s early bat sponsorship deals.
Dhoni has started practising in the nets to gear up for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. As the wicketkeeper-batsman, he guided CSK to their fifth title victory, equaling a record in 2023.
