Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has come out in support of underfire batter Virat Kohli, backing him to do well in the upcoming games. Incidentally, Kohli has had an extended lean patch with the bat, going without scoring a century for almost three years. His last hundred came in the pink-ball Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2019.
Moreover, the right-handed batter has scored 142 runs in six matches at an average of 23.67 in ODI cricket this year. For the first time since 2008, his ODI strike rate in one calendar year is less than 80.
He also endured poor form in the recently concluded T20I series against England. The talismanic scorer managed 12 runs in the two games he played. His poor form has put his place in the T20I side under the scanner with only a few months to go for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. Many former cricketers have also voiced their opinion on dropping the 33-year-old from the shortest format.
While the voice continues to grow, Wasim Jaffer has backed Virat Kohli to hit the straps soon. Taking to Instagram, the former cricketer wrote, “The darkest hour is just before the dawn. He will be back.”
Virat Kohli doubtful for 2nd ODI against England
Former Indian captain Virat Kohli is likely to miss the second ODI against England, slated to take place at Lord’s in London on Thursday. Kohli suffered a groin injury during the third T20I and missed the series opener on Tuesday at The Oval. Shreyas Iyer played in his absence.
According to reports in the ANI, the star batter hasn’t recovered yet and is likely to sit out the second game as well. If he continues to miss out, Iyer will keep his place in the playing XI.
India are currently 1-0 up in the three-match series and will look to wrap up the series in the next game.
