“They Have The Best Batting Talent In The World,” Ian Chappell Showers Praise On Team India

Ian Chappell on IPL 2021

Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell talked about the depth that many teams have in their squad. It’s a fact that during the COVID-19 pandemic teams need more players in the squad. So that certain players can be given rest from bio-bubble and new players get a chance to represent the team.

During this pandemic era, many second strings teams were seen representing the nation. Also, some second-string teams performed brilliantly and didn’t disappoint at all. Ian Chappell also discussed about recent India vs Australia Test series. Notably in the Border Gavaskar Trophy India was able to defeat Australia despite the unavailability of many players.

Captain Virat Kohli opted out of the series due to personal reasons and many players got injured in that series. Still, India somehow managed to earn a victory. Chappell believes India’s victory at the Australian soil was possible because of their great depth.

“It has become abundantly clear during this pandemic-ravaged era that one of the prized ingredients in a cricket squad is depth. Ideally, it should be both in batting and bowling. India displayed their ample depth – particularly in quick bowling – in defeating Australia on their recent tour. In making six changes from the first to second Test and still defeating England comfortably at Edgbaston, New Zealand surprised with their talent too,” said Chappell as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Chappell also asserted that team England also has quality depth in the squad. However, he highlighted that India and England are ahead of team Australia in terms of depth. Chappell reckons that’s India is ahead of every other team in terms of batting depth. He also praised India’s development system for producing great talents.

“When it comes to batting talent, India are best placed of all the teams. Their development system, which produces players with traditional techniques and provides ample opportunities at first-class level, is one to be envied,” said Chappell

“(But) mind you, the extent of India’s reserves will be fully tested on the England tour as they have already had to react to isolation requirements and they haven’t even played a warm-up game. Just another example of why modern cricket teams consider depth king,” he said.
