India crashed out of the ongoing Women’s World Cup losing to South Africa in the last-ball thriller on Sunday in Christchurch. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has offered his backing to entire squad, saying that they have made the entire country proud.
Mithali Raj & Co. suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of South Africa in a do-or-die encounter and failed to book a semifinal berth. Taking to Twitter a day after India’s defeat, batting icon Kohli congratulated the Mithali-led side for their superlative efforts at the World Cup 2022.
“Always tough to bow out of a tournament you aim to win but our women’s team can hold their heads high. You gave it your all and we are proud of you,” Kohli wrote on the microblogging website.

Mignon du Preez knocks India out with an unbeaten 50
Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana gave India a flying start but South Africa made a superb comeback once Shafali walked back after a half-century.
Despite crossing the 200-run mark in the 37th over, Mithali Raj & Co failed to post a total in excess of 300. They managed to post only 277 runs on the board in their 50 overs.
In reply, Laura Wolvaardt and Lara Goodall set up the run chase for South Africa after losing Lizelle Lee early on in the innings.
They added 125 runs for the second wicket but India struck back, dismissing both the set batters. Mignon du Preez came out in the middle at the dismissal of Wolvaardt and paced the innings beautifully.
India conceded 11 runs in the 46th over followed by another 14 in the next that shifted the momentum in South Africa’s favor.
