South African cricketer Chloe Tryon took a brilliant catch on Sunday, to dismiss the Indian opener Smriti Mandhana at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.

Indian team posted 274 runs in the first innings. The openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma got India off to a great start. They put together a 91-runs stand for the opening partnership before Shafali Verma was run out for 53 runs. Her innings included eight boundaries. Soon after Shafali’s wicket, Yashika Bhatia too was dismissed.

Smriti Mandhana then Mithali Raj to stabilize the Indian innings. Mandhana and Mithali Raj scored 80 runs for the third wicket. In the 32nd over of the innings, Chloe Tryon’s stunning effort sent Mandhana back in the hut off Masabata Klaas’ bowling.

Mandhana tried to move to the leg-side to loft the ball over mid-off, however, did not get the elevation. Tryon who was at the mid-off ran towards her right and dived to take a brilliant catch. Mandhana had to go back to the pavilion for 71 runs, off 84 balls.

After Smriti Mandhana’s wicket, Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur batted well to take India to a good total. Mithali Raj was dismissed for 68 runs off 84 balls, including eight boundaries. On the other hand, Harmanpreet Kaur missed out on her fifty, as she got out for 48 runs. India set South Africa a target of 274 runs.

Indian Opener Shafali Verma played a key role, by getting the team off to a great start. She slammed 53 runs off 46 balls, at a strike rate of 115.22. Speaking at the mid-innings break, Verma expressed that she is happy with her performance. The opener added that she was looking to time the ball, and that paid off well for her.

“Very happy because I always think about what the team wants to do. I timed well, very happy. I know they are fast, was just thinking to time the ball. What I thought, I went out there and did, so very happy for that,” said Shafali Verma.

Meanwhile, the South African team has managed to build the innings, after the fall of an early wicket. Lizelle Lee got run out for 6 runs. South Africa is one down for 88 runs on the board in 17 overs.
