The debate regarding split captaincy between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has been doing the rounds in the Indian media for quite some time now. While many cricket experts have said yes to this formulae, many like VVS Laxman have said a big no to it. He said Kohli is doing perfectly fine in all three formats as captain and he should be allowed to continue. Meanwhile, Rohit’s captaincy especially in the T20I format has been praised by many cricket experts as well.

VVS Laxman has expressed reservations about India endorsing split captaincy and the former cricketer also explained why Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not share leadership duties for the Men In Blue.

Virat Kohli Should Remain As Captain: VVS Laxman

“I have always felt that as long as your captain is not burdened by captaincy and he is someone who enjoys the responsibility without compromising his performances, in this case, Virat the batsman, it should be the same captain for all the formats if he is regular in all the three formats,” Laxman was quoted as saying by News 18.

India reaching the 2019 World Cup semi-final and the ICC World Test Championship final recently have been Virat Kohli’s highest points as the team’s captain. The Kohli-led side will play the WTC final against New Zealand in Southampton later this year in June.

VVS Laxman also opined on England’s split captaincy techniques and what makes it work. Joe Root is the captain of the England Test team, while Eoin Morgan leads them in the ODIs and T20Is.

“In England, the split captaincy works because Joe Root is not a regular in white-ball cricket, or Eoin Morgan is not a Test player. If a captain is all three formats players and on top of that, a performer, it should be one captain,” Laxman added.

VVS Laxman concluded by praising him for his contribution to the team’s success in the recent past while also adding the presence of senior players like Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit, Ishant Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin makes it easier to lead the team across formats.
