Virender Sehwag is considered one the most destructive batsman of all time. Sehwag is also amongst the best cricketers to play for Men in Blue. The former opener with his aggressive approach became a nightmare for bowlers in his era. Sehwag got used to starting his innings with a boundary or a maximum.

Meanwhile, in a remarkable career, he played many memorable knocks and helped the team in victory. However, One of the most controversial moments of his career happened with the Head coach of the team.

The former New Zealand cricketer John Wright was selected as India’s coach in the year 2000. John gained more popularity and praise as a coach for India than playing cricket himself. He established a good relationship with the Sourav Ganguly led the side in the 2000s. John coached India till the year 2005. Team India successfully renovated under John Wright and achieved a lot of success. Meanwhile, Head coach John Wright once slapped star opener Virender Sehwag.

The terrible incident of coach Wright slapping Sehwag happened after the poor performance from the batter. Wright wanted Virender Sehwag to smash a hundred but he got out after performing below average. This is what caused the head coach of the team to slap a cricketer.

The 42-year-old Sehwag was really upset after the terrible incident in the dressing room. Former cricketer Rajeev Shukla opened about this matter and stated that Sachin Tendulkar had to get involved to get things right.

While describing the incident Rajeev revealed Sourav Ganguly wanted Wright to apologize to Virender Sehwag. However, Sachin Tendulkar wanted things to end quickly to not let the coach get embarrassed.

“I saw Sehwag in a bad mood. When I asked him he said that John had slapped him. It became an issue and Ganguly insisted that they will not leave (dressing room) unless Wright apologizes to Sehwag. “Then I found Wright and asked him if he did it. John said that he wanted Sehwag to score a century but ‘Sehwag repeated his mistake of lifting the ball and got out, so I was angry. And he is like a disciple to me so I just pushed him out of anger’,”

“Sachin came to me and said that ‘you must ensure that John does not apologize, otherwise the coach will lose his respect’. I got back to Sehwag and explained that it was just like a father chides his son, John did it. He understood and let it go,”
