Washington Sundar Called Up As Back-Up For Axar Patel Ahead Of Asia Cup Final

All-rounder Washington Sundar has been called up by Team India as an injury cover for Axar Patel ahead of the 2023 Asia Cup final. Axar suffered a couple of blows while batting against Bangladesh on Friday, September 15, and needed medical help. His participation is in doubt for the final of the continental championship against Sri Lanka which will take place on Sunday, September 16 in Colombo.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Axar Patel is most likely to miss the final. He scored a fighting 42-run knock against Bangladesh while chasing 266 runs on a trick wicket. During the innings, he hurt his right wrist while attempting to return to his crease to avoid a stumping. In the following over, he was hit by a throw from the boundary on the left wrist while taking a single.

Washington Sundar has been asked to join Team India in Colombo as Patel’s injury cover. He will the team later today in Colombo. He was in Bengaluru with India’s squad for the Asian Games and will re-join them after the Asia Cup final. In 16 ODI matches, Washington Sundar has taken 16 wickets at an average of 27.18, with 3/30 as his best bowling figures. He has also scored 233 runs at an average of 29.12, with a highest score of 51 runs.

India suffers defeat in dead-rubber against Bangladesh ahead of Asia Cup final

Team India lost to Bangladesh by six runs in the final match of the Super Four of the 2023 Asia Cup on Friday, September 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Batting first, Bangladesh put on 265 runs on the back of half-centuries by Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy. In response, India got all out for 259 runs, with Mustafizur Rahman picking up three wickets. Shubman Gill slammed a century in the innings, while Axar Patel also played a fine hand. However, they could not take India over the line.
