Axar Patel, the versatile player for Team India, executed a brilliant dismissal of Barry McCarthy during their T20 World Cup 2024 encounter at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 5, leaving the Irish team struggling at 50/8 within 12 overs.
After the fast bowlers wreaked havoc with the new ball, India’s captain Rohit Sharma introduced spin in the 12th over. Axar wasted no time in making an impact, dismissing McCarthy with only his second delivery, putting Ireland under pressure.
Axar delivered a ball to the Irish batsman, who attempted to play it towards the leg side to get off the mark. However, he could only manage to edge it, with the ball landing on the right side of the non-striker.
The Indian all-rounder swiftly moved to his right and executed a full-stretch dive from behind the non-striker to complete the catch with both hands. McCarthy departed to the pavilion without adding any runs to the scoreboard.
India is firmly in control in their inaugural T20 World Cup match
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team, won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm fast bowler, struck early by dismissing both openers in the third over. Ireland could only muster 26/2 in the initial six overs.
The introduction of Hardik Pandya into the bowling attack made an instant impact. The versatile all-rounder quickly took a wicket, followed by Jasprit Bumrah taking charge to further dent the opposition, reducing them to 36/4. Hardik claimed two more wickets, finishing with figures of 3/27 from his four overs.
Gareth Delany contributed a quickfire 26 runs off 14 deliveries, adding some vital runs to the Irish total. However, Ireland was eventually dismissed for 96 runs in only 16 overs.
