England fast bowler Brydon Carse delivered a superb short-pitched delivery to remove a well-set Karun Nair on Day 1 (Wednesday, July 2) of the second Test of the five-match series against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The breakthrough came on the third ball of the 24th over in India’s innings.
Carse bowled a short-of-length ball that left Nair uncertain—caught between going forward or staying back. The delivery climbed sharply, surprising the batter and forcing a tentative push. The ball flew off the edge and was safely taken by Harry Brook at second slip.

India’s No. 3 batter failed to build on his promising start and was dismissed for 31 runs off 50 balls, which featured five boundaries. His departure left India at 95 for 2 after 23.3 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal steadied with a half-century as England struck twice in the opening session of the 2nd Test
After choosing to bowl first in the second Test, England’s pace duo Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse maintained tight and disciplined bowling, restricting Indian openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to just 15 runs in the first eight overs. Woakes eventually got the breakthrough in the ninth over, dismissing Rahul for just 2 runs off 26 balls as he chopped one onto his stumps.
Karun Nair came in at No. 3 and appeared confident, timing his cover drives well. Along with Jaiswal, he helped stabilise the innings and shifted the momentum with some attacking shots. However, just as their partnership started gaining momentum, Carse struck at a key moment, dismissing Nair for 31 and ending an 80-run stand for the second wicket.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal went on to complete his 11th Test fifty and looked solid at the crease. At lunch on Day 1, India stood at 98/2 in 25 overs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 62 and captain Shubman Gill on 1.
