India’s opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal faced an early challenge on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England, as his bat handle broke during the first hour of play. The incident occurred at Old Trafford in Manchester after England captain Ben Stokes chose to bowl first, making conditions tough with the hard new ball.
Coming into the match after two low scores at Lord’s, Jaiswal looked determined to bounce back. He showed good judgement at the crease, punishing loose deliveries while carefully negotiating the challenging ones, to build some rhythm and settle in.
However, in the ninth over, while defending a delivery from Chris Woakes that rose sharply, the ball struck higher up the bat, close to the joint. The impact caused the bat handle to snap and separate, forcing Jaiswal to replace it. You can watch the video here:

Responding to the batter’s request, Karun Nair arrived on the field with a few bats in hand for him to choose from.
Jaiswal shows patience and composure on Day 1 of 4th Test
After replacing his broken bat, the young batter continued his innings while England remained on the lookout for an early breakthrough. Jaiswal struck a boundary off Chris Woakes in the following over, but the pacer kept challenging him with deliveries from around the wicket.
A few balls narrowly missed the outside edge, but Jaiswal remained focused and showed good judgement in deciding which balls to play and which to leave. As of now, Yashasvi Jaiswal is unbeaten on 14 from 43 balls in the 17th over of the session.
England captain Ben Stokes has brought himself into the attack, as the frontline pacers have not been able to claim a wicket so far. India’s score stands at 48 for no loss, with KL Rahul steady at 32 off 55 balls.
