Former BCCI Secretary and current ICC President, Jay Shah, expressed his admiration for Rohit Sharma at a recent star-studded event in Mumbai. Although Rohit no longer holds any leadership position in international cricket, Shah stated he would continue to refer to him as “captain,” highlighting the two ICC titles Rohit has won for India. A video of Shah’s remarks has since gone viral on social media.
After India suffered a heartbreaking loss in the 2023 World Cup final under Rohit’s leadership, the team bounced back to claim the next two ICC white-ball trophies. The Men in Blue ended an 11-year ICC title drought by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, defeating South Africa in the final, and followed it up by lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai with a win over New Zealand.
During the event, Jay Shah remarked:
“Hamaare captain idhar baithe hain. Main toh captain hee bolunga kyunki aap 2 trophy jeet ke laaye isliye. 2023 mein lagataar 10 jeet ke baad, hum dil jeete lekin trophy nahin jeet paaye. February 2024 mein maine Rajkot mein bola tha ki is baar hum dil bhi jeetenge aur cup bhi jeetenge.”
The Nagpur-born cricketer stepped away from T20Is following the 2024 T20 World Cup, and last year, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain in his place.
Rohit Sharma Set To Make ODI Comeback Against New Zealand
Meanwhile, Rohit is set to make his return when Team India take on New Zealand in the three-match ODI series starting January 11 in Vadodara. The dynamic opener enjoyed a prolific 2025 in ODIs, amassing 650 runs across 14 matches at an average of 50, with a strike rate of 100.46.
Ending the year as the ICC’s top-ranked ODI batter, the right-hander will aim to continue his impressive form into the new season.
