The Indian cricket team, true to their tradition, relished in the “fielder of the match” award after their semifinal victory against Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025. The award was given by fielding coach T Dilip who came up with four nominees: Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli. Adding to the nostalgia, Dilip even invited former head coach Ravi Shastri to present the medal.

Points scored here are a warm reception for Shastri in the Indian dressing room, as players received him with great pomp. It also stands as evidence regarding the kinds of values that the team upholds in order to become better in whatever they do, including fielding. The “fielder of the match” award and theme have thus become almost entrenched in the very culture of this team, and with Shastri at the occasion, importance gets magnified even more.

Team India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, defeated Australia by 4 wickets in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025, thus making it to the finals of the tournament. India won the match at the Dubai International Stadium with 11 balls to spare by successfully chasing down the target of 265 runs.

The Indian dressing room has had a long-standing tradition of the Best Fielder Medal, which did not lag after the semifinal. Shreyas Iyer was awarded the Best Fielder Medal for his splendid fielding in the semifinal. A very special guest was invited to present the award to Iyer, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri. Shastri presented the medal to Iyer in the dressing room.

Alex Carey played a crucial knock of 61 runs off 57 balls, including 8 fours and a six, batting at number six. If Iyer hadn’t run him out, Australia’s score could have reached 270-280. In a video posted by the BCCI, Shastri praised the Indian players for their terrific showing in the semifinal and conveyed his best wishes for the final. Shastri is part of the commentary panel for the Champions Trophy. The final match will be held on March 9 in Dubai.
