As anticipation builds for one of cricket’s most high-voltage encounters in the T20 World Cup 2026, the spotlight has once again shifted to the fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan. The match had been surrounded by uncertainty after discussions about a potential boycott created confusion over whether the contest would take place.

However, once confirmation arrived that Pakistan would participate in all scheduled fixtures, including the marquee clash against India in Colombo, attention quickly returned to the cricketing spectacle itself.

With the fixture locked in, preparations intensified within both camps. The political noise and off-field discussions may have added to the drama, but the players and coaching staff appeared determined to keep their focus strictly on performance.

The India camp, in particular, maintained that they had always prepared with the expectation that the match would proceed as scheduled, regardless of the surrounding developments.

Ten Doeschate’s Assessment and Pakistan’s Edge

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate offered a candid evaluation of the situation, acknowledging that Pakistan could hold a slight advantage heading into the encounter.

He noted that Pakistan had already spent considerable time in Colombo, allowing them to acclimatize to local conditions and settle into their routines. Familiarity with pitch behaviour and weather patterns can often prove crucial in T20 cricket, where margins are razor-thin.

Despite recognizing this logistical edge, Ten Doeschate emphasized that India’s approach remained steady and unaffected. He said, “We kind of never changed the preparation that the game wasn’t going to happen, we always had an impression that something would transpire and we would play, so it’s not a big change in the way we go about things.”

He further added, “No, like I said, you know we kind of accepted that as a status quo and until we got there and they didn’t show up we were assuming we were going to play.”

These remarks underline the team’s mindset — one rooted in consistency and mental readiness rather than reacting to external distractions.

Focus on Cricket and the Bigger Picture

Ten Doeschate made it clear that the Indian team intends to steer clear of non-cricketing debates and concentrate solely on the sport. He stated, “We’re also trying to stay clear of all the politics … I think it’s really important for us just to focus on the cricket side of things.”

His comments reflect a deliberate attempt to shield the dressing room from outside influences. While Pakistan’s extended stay in Colombo might provide comfort and familiarity, India’s calm and structured preparation could prove equally valuable. As the countdown continues, fans can expect a fiercely contested encounter driven by skill, composure, and the weight of a historic rivalry.
