“What An Incredible Player, What An Incredible Captain” – AB de Villiers On MS Dhoni

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers marvels at the enduring presence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in cricket, likening him to an unstoppable force akin to a diesel engine. Dhoni’s remarkable longevity at the top level, particularly with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is a testament to his unparalleled commitment and skill.

As he gears up to lead CSK for an unprecedented 15th season in IPL 2024, Dhoni’s leadership and prowess remain unmatched, having steered the team to a fifth title in the previous season.

De Villiers said: “There were a lot of rumours about MS Dhoni finishing up last year; that was not the case, ladies and gentlemen. He would be back again. Will this be his final season? No one knows. He just seems to be this diesel engine that never ends. He keeps running. What an incredible player, what an incredible captain.”

“I believe it’s through their presence, it’s through the leadership of MSD, a calm coach in Stephen Fleming, senior players in Ravindra Jadeja and others who have really set this incredible culture alive.”

“They are a very intimidating team to play against. They are never easy to beat. That is always a great characteristic of a very successful unit, of a very successful franchise. When you are playing well, it’s ‘Yes, no problem, no one’s gonna stop us’. But, when you are not playing so well, they always find a way to compete.”

CSK’s consistent success, sharing the record for the most championships with Mumbai Indians, is attributed largely to their steadfast adherence to a core group of experienced players. The commencement of their IPL 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 in Chennai marks another chapter in their storied journey.

Meanwhile, the return of all-rounder Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians after a two-season hiatus is seen as a potential solution to the team’s balance issues, particularly if he resumes bowling duties. De Villiers, reflecting on Pandya’s impactful tenure with Mumbai Indians, believes his reintroduction could provide the necessary impetus for the five-time champions to maintain their competitive edge.

Having departed Mumbai Indians in 2022 to join the newly formed Gujarat Titans, Pandya’s leadership propelled the franchise to victory in their inaugural season while securing a runner-up finish in the subsequent year. His return to Mumbai Indians adds depth and experience to the squad, potentially bolstering their quest for IPL glory once again.
