What was meant to be a day of celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned into a nightmare after a stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed at least 11 lives and injured over 50. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday during a bus parade organised hours after RCB clinched their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings.
The massive turnout of fans led to a chaotic situation, culminating in a deadly stampede. In response to the incident, four individuals, including RCB’s marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, were arrested. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had directed police to act swiftly, leading to Sosale’s arrest early Friday at Kempegowda International Airport while en route to Mumbai.
A case has been registered under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and three others from the event management company DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd have also been detained.
Nikhil Sosale, Key Figure Behind RCB’s Branding and Outreach
Nikhil Sosale, born on August 18, 1986, has been with Diageo India for over 13 years and served as the head of marketing and revenue for RCB for nearly two years. Diageo owns United Spirits Limited, which in turn owns RCB after the exit of former owner Vijay Mallya. Sosale, a Double Major graduate from James Cook University in Queensland, has long been instrumental in shaping RCB’s branding and business strategy.
Known to have close ties with key team members and celebrities, he’s often seen in the RCB VIP box alongside Anushka Sharma and is followed by Virat Kohli on Instagram. His wife, Malvika Nayak, is also a close friend of Anushka Sharma. Over the years, Sosale has played significant roles not only during IPL auctions but also in team celebrations, including RCB’s 2024 Women’s Premier League title win.
Investigation and Aftermath of the Stampede
Police investigations suggest that Sosale may have been involved in coordinating the parade, given his strategic role in the franchise’s marketing. Even as tragedy unfolded outside the stadium, celebrations reportedly continued inside with RCB issuing a statement acknowledging the deaths only hours later.
The Central Crime Branch, under DCP Akshay’s leadership, led overnight raids and made the arrests. The accused are expected to be handed over to the Crime Investigation Department. Authorities are now scrutinising the decision-making behind the parade and examining whether adequate crowd control measures were considered in planning such a large-scale event.
