India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, defended the team’s decision to rest Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the second ODI against West Indies in Barbados, despite their six-wicket loss.

Dravid explained that the Men in Blue wanted to try out some players with an eye on the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup, taking into account the injuries affecting some key team members.

Sanju Samson and Axar Patel were included in the playing XI for the second ODI. However, India’s batting lineup faltered, and they were bowled out for 181. West Indies achieved the target in 36.4 overs, securing a comprehensive victory. After the unexpected loss, Dravid backed India’s decision to experiment with the playing XI, stating that it was their last chance to try out some players due to the limited time left before the Asia Cup.

He emphasized the importance of providing game time to other players in case they are needed in critical situations during the upcoming tournaments. Dravid clarified that playing Rohit and Kohli in the series would not have provided enough answers, given the injuries at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The team wanted to give other players a chance to prove themselves and make decisions on the best players to include in the squad. While both Rohit and Kohli featured in the opening ODI, Kohli didn’t bat, and Rohit demoted himself to No. 7 in the batting order.

Despite India’s poor performance in the second ODI, Dravid maintained a focus on the bigger picture, considering the forthcoming multi-nation events. He stressed the need to prioritize building a strong team for the Asia Cup and World Cup, rather than getting caught up in individual matches or series.

India’s loss to West Indies in the second ODI marked their first defeat against the opponent in ODIs after a streak of nine consecutive wins. The series decider is scheduled to take place at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on August 1.
