Wiaan Mulder etched his name in Test cricket history on Day 1 of the second Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe. Stepping in as South Africa’s stand-in captain, Mulder played an extraordinary unbeaten knock of 264, breaking multiple records. According to the ICC, this was the highest score ever by a player on debut as Test captain.
He also became the fastest South African to reach 250 runs in terms of balls faced. His 264 now stands as the highest individual score by a South African batter in a single day of Test cricket. Additionally, he smashed the second-fastest double hundred ever recorded by a South African.
Dominant Display by South Africa
South Africa ended the first day at a massive 465/4, marking their highest total in a single day of Test cricket. This total also became the most runs scored in one day on Zimbabwean soil in Test history.
Although Zimbabwe managed to take a few early wickets, Mulder steadied the innings with solid support from David Bedingham, with whom he shared a 184-run stand. Later, Lhuan-dre Pretorius chipped in with a brisk half-century, further boosting South Africa’s position. This powerful performance placed the World Test Champions in full control on the very first day of the match.
Leadership and Squad Updates
Mulder’s elevation to captaincy came after Keshav Maharaj was ruled out of the series due to a groin injury, and regular skipper Temba Bavuma also remained unavailable. However, Mulder had already made headlines in the first Test by scoring a century and guiding South Africa to a dominant 328-run win.
His leadership and form have now turned him into the team’s most crucial player in the series. The Zimbabwe playing XI for this Test included Dion Myers, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Nick Welch, Sean Williams, Craig Ervine (captain), Wessly Madhevere, Tafadzwa Tsiga (wicketkeeper), Wellington Masakadza, Kundai Matigimu, Blessing Muzarabani, and Tanaka Chivanga.
South Africa’s XI featured Tony de Zorzi, Lesego Senokwane, Wiaan Mulder (captain), David Bedingham, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, Kyle Verreynne (wicketkeeper), Senuran Muthusamy, Corbin Bosch, Prenelan Subrayen, and Codi Yusuf.
