Rohit Sharma has once again ignited the debate of whether he should replace Virat Kohli as India’s T20I captain after leading Mumbai Indians to the record-breaking 5th IPL title. Since then, former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra have been at loggerheads and recently they had a heated exchange over captaincy matters.

Meanwhile, some experts and former cricketers believe Kohli should continue leading the national team in the shortest format, some are of the opinion that it’s time for Rohit to take over in T20Is. Recently, Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir were involved in a heated debate over Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli as India’s T20 captain with the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India next year.

While Gambhir spoke in favour of Rohit being handed over the T20 captaincy on the basis of his stellar record in IPL, Chopra remained resolute that Kohli should continue while admitting that there is very less time for a big change with the World Cup around the corner.

“Virat Kohli is not a bad captain but Rohit Sharma is better. There is a vast difference between the quality of captaincy,” said Gambhir on Star Sports show Cricket Connected where Chopra was part of the discussion panel.

“There is no time for a change and to build a new team. There has to be games for a new philosophy to be introduced. With 5-6 T20s before T20 World Cup next year then I am against a change in captaincy,” Chopra responded to Gambhir’s comments.

Things escalated when Gautam Gambhir questioned why a captain cannot be picked on his IPL performances when a play is being picked by the same parameter. However, Aakash Chopra maintained that Virat Kohli has done nothing wrong so far to be remover as the captain.

“If we choose players based on IPL performance, then why don’t we choose a captain based on IPL performance? Else, don’t keep IPL has a parameter for batting and bowling performances as well,” said Gautam Gambhir.

“International performances will be considered when looking for international pedigree and IPL performances will be kept in isolation. If certain players have done well for India and have a bad IPL, it’s fine. Virat Kohli has done nothing wrong as India’s captain in T20s so far,” Aakash Chopra responded.
