Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has dismissed claims of criticising current Indian skipper Virat Kohli for his credentials as an ODI and Test captain. Kohli is making comeback to lead the Indian team in the upcoming four-match Test series against England starting from February 05 in Chennai. He was on parental leave for the birth of his first child after the first Test match against Australia. Ajinkya Rahane led in the final three tests and won the series 2-1.

Talking to Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir said that he had never questioned Kohli’s capacity as an ODI or Test captain but only did so in the T20I format. Virat Kohli’s trophy-less run in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore prompted the former left-hander to pose this question.

“I have always had question marks over his T20 captaincy but I never had question marks on his 50-over or Test match captaincy. India has done very well under his leadership especially in red-ball cricket and I am sure India will continue to grow further under his leadership,” Gambhir told Star Sports Game Plan.

He further said that Virat has himself admitted that the Indian team does not depend on only him to win matches and have other quality players as well.

India Has Never Only Relied On Virat Kohli: Gautam Gambhir

“India was never dependent on one or two people and Virat Kohli has said that time and time again. Yes, Virat Kohli is the leader and I am sure he is going to be as happy as the rest of the squad as well. He has done really well in Test cricket,” he added.

The Indian skipper has not scored a Test century for more than a year and a half now. The last Test ton he scored was against Bangladesh in the Pink-Ball Test in Kolkata. He did not score a single century in 2020 in both ODIs & Tests and also did not win a single Test match while playing. He lost two Tests as captain against New Zealand and the first Test against Australia in Adelaide.

Virat Kohli is eyeing to surpass a number of records in the upcoming Test series against England.
