Ahead of IPL 2027, reports suggest that Mumbai Indians (MI) could be ready to part ways with star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. If he leaves the franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are believed to be one of the frontrunners to sign him.
According to MyKhel, KKR are interested in acquiring Hardik through an all-cash trade deal with Mumbai Indians. Hardik returned to MI as captain in 2024, but the team has had mixed results under his leadership. In three seasons, Mumbai reached the playoffs only once and finished in the bottom half of the table on the other two occasions.
Although Hardik Pandya’s performances with both bat and ball dipped last season, he remains a valuable player because of his all-round abilities. On paper, a move to KKR would look like a smart deal, as it would give the three-time champions the quality Indian pace-bowling all-rounder they have been missing.
However, there is more to the potential trade than just his all-round skills. KKR would also need to consider a few possible drawbacks before making such a big move. With that in mind, here are three reasons why signing Hardik Pandya could turn out to be the wrong decision if the trade goes through.
#1 KKR Could End Up Paying a Heavy Price.
Signing Hardik Pandya through a trade could prove to be an expensive move for KKR. The all-rounder was retained by Mumbai Indians for ₹16.35 crore ahead of IPL 2026. Since he is one of the league’s biggest stars and a title-winning captain, KKR may have to offer a much bigger cash package to convince MI to let him go.
On top of that, Mumbai Indians are looking to rebuild after failing to win an IPL title since 2020. Because of that, they may not agree to an all-cash deal and could instead ask for one or two players in return. This might force KKR to part ways with some of their important players.
Spending a huge amount of money or giving up key players for Hardik could be a risky move. His recent injury record remains a concern, and he can no longer be relied upon to bowl his full quota of four overs regularly. As a result, the trade could affect KKR’s squad balance and overall depth.
#2 Hardik Isn’t an Ideal Long-Term Captaincy Option.
KKR could see Hardik Pandya as the answer to their captaincy problems. Since winning the IPL title in 2024, the team has failed to reach the playoffs in the next two seasons under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership. As a result, the franchise may be eager to appoint a new captain, making a move for Hardik an attractive option.
However, bringing in Hardik as captain could simply replace one short-term solution with another. While he has leadership experience, his recurring injury concerns mean he may not be the ideal long-term captain for the franchise. KKR could soon find themselves searching for another leader, making the trade less beneficial in the long run.
Appointing Hardik as captain after bringing him in from another franchise could also disrupt KKR’s long-term leadership plans. The team has spent years developing players from within, and this could be the right time to give someone like Rinku Singh an opportunity to lead the side. Backing an existing player as captain may prove to be a better long-term strategy than relying on an experienced but injury-prone leader from outside.
#3 Could Affect KKR’s Squad Chemistry.
Signing Hardik Pandya could create fresh selection headaches for KKR. If he joins the team, the batting order may have to be reshuffled to accommodate him in the middle order. While KKR struggled to find the right opening pair last season, their middle order, featuring Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Cameron Green and Manish Pandey, was relatively settled.
Hardik’s arrival could also force changes to the overseas combination, as he and Cameron Green offer similar all-round skills. This might make it difficult for KKR to get the right balance in their playing XI. There are also questions over Hardik’s captaincy.
His tactical decisions, bowling changes and overall management of the team came under criticism last season. If he takes over the leadership at KKR, adapting to a new dressing room and style of play may not be easy, and it could end up disturbing a squad that already has a settled core.
