Deepak Chahar will be one of the top fast bowlers available at the IPL 2025 auction. The right-arm pacer has faced a challenging period in his career, dealing with ongoing injury issues. Over the past three years, Chahar has spent 18 months in rehabilitation, recovering from several setbacks.
In IPL 2024, Chahar played in eight matches for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. However, he has recently made a return to domestic cricket and is eager to feature in the upcoming edition of the IPL.
Recently, Deepak Chahar expressed his wish to rejoin the CSK setup but also mentioned he would be open to joining Rajasthan Royals (RR) if they pick him in the auction. In a conversation with TOI, he shared:
“I think they will bid for me again. I would like to don the yellow jersey again and if not that, then I would want Rajasthan Royals to bid for me.”

Here are the 3 reasons that why Rajasthan Royals should choose Deepak Chahar:
#3 Experience with the Jaipur pitch from his domestic career with Rajasthan
Deepak Chahar represents the Rajasthan state team in domestic cricket. Notably, in his first-class debut in 2010, he took 12 wickets for the team in Jaipur, a match in which Hyderabad was bowled out for a record-low total of 21 in Ranji Trophy history.
This performance led to Chahar being picked by Rajasthan Royals in 2011. However, the Agra-born pacer spent two years on the bench without playing a match. Despite this, his time with RR would have given him valuable insight into the conditions at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Moreover, with over a decade of experience playing at this venue, there’s arguably no one better suited for the role than Chahar himself.
#2 Rajasthan Royals are in search of a new-ball pacer
Rajasthan Royals decided to release pacers such as Trent Boult, Avesh Khan, and Nandre Burger, who served as the team’s new-ball bowlers during the 2024 season. They retained just one pacer, Sandeep Sharma, who is likely to focus on restricting the opposition in the death overs, though he could also be used with the new ball.
In contrast, Deepak Chahar presents a reliable option for RR during the powerplay. If fully fit, Chahar has the potential to claim early breakthroughs and can even bowl his full quota of overs if needed in the first 10 overs.
Notably, Chahar has taken 55 wickets of top-order batters out of his total of 77 dismissals in the IPL, which accounts for over 70% of his overall wickets. This statistic highlights his proficiency in taking wickets with the new ball.
#1 Impressive T20 record
Since his T20 debut in 2010, Deepak Chahar has taken 167 wickets in 146 matches. His best figures of 6/7 came for India against Bangladesh in 2019. Chahar recorded his best IPL season in 2019, taking 22 wickets, which played a key role in CSK finishing as runners-up.
In his first three full seasons (2018-2020), he maintained an economy rate under 8, a valuable asset in the T20 format. After claiming 14 wickets in the 2021 season, Chahar was re-signed by CSK for INR 14 Crore.
However, he missed the entire 2022 season due to a quadriceps injury. Chahar made a strong return in 2023, taking 13 wickets in 10 matches to help Chennai secure their fifth IPL title.
