Quality spinners are always highly sought after in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a format often dominated by batters, spinners play a crucial role in taking wickets and controlling the flow of runs, putting pressure on opposing batters.
In the high-scoring T20 format, only a few spinners have managed to establish themselves as threats that batters approach with caution, often opting to play them carefully.
One such spinner in recent IPL seasons has been Maheesh Theekshana of Sri Lanka. The right-arm off-spinner has exclusively played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), claiming 25 wickets in 27 matches.
CSK released Theekshana prior to the IPL 2025 auction, but there is a chance they could use their Right to Match (RTM) option to re-sign him. In addition to CSK, other franchises are also likely to target Theekshana.
Here are the 3 teams that should consider bidding for Maheesh Theekshana in the IPL 2025 Auction:
#1 SunRisers Hyderabad
Runners-up from the previous season, SunRisers Hyderabad, released all of their spin-bowling options, including Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmad, Mayank Markande, and Wanindu Hasaranga. The franchise will now need a lead spinner to strengthen their attack for the upcoming seasons.
Theekshana brings valuable international experience and has also showcased his skills in various T20 leagues around the world, such as the Lanka Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, ILT20, and SA20.
With Daniel Vettori on the coaching staff at SRH, Theekshana could be an ideal addition, helping the franchise build a stronger squad for the upcoming season.
#2 Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals have retained Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Riyan Parag, but they have also parted ways with several prominent players ahead of the upcoming IPL auction.
Notably, the Royals have released their spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, with Chahal’s departure surprising many due to his consistent performances for the team.
The Royals will now need to find a lead spinner unless they manage to bring Chahal back. Maheesh Theekshana, who has represented the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, could be a potential target for them in the upcoming auction.
#3 Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have made only three retentions and have a significant purse heading into the IPL 2025 auction. Bowling has often been a concern for RCB. At the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where batters tend to dominate, they will need bowlers who can manage pressure, control the opposition, and take wickets.
Maheesh Theekshana could be an ideal fit for these needs, as he is effective in both the powerplay and middle overs. RCB also lacks a lead spinner, a gap they struggled with last season. They will likely target someone like Theekshana, given his skills and suitability for their bowling requirements.
