One of the best off-spinners in world cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to be in high demand at the upcoming IPL auction, set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. Notably, Ashwin was not retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the auction.
Ashwin is anticipated to play a key role for India in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, beginning on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth. Over the years, he has become a vital player for both the Indian team and the franchises he has represented.
Although his international white-ball career has slowed, Ashwin continues to evolve by adding new skills and versatility to his game. He is now capable of being used as a floater in the batting order and can take on various roles in the bowling attack.
Here are three teams that could likely sign him in the upcoming auction:
#3 Chennai Super Kings
Ashwin began his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings, where he gained widespread recognition. He made his debut for CSK in 2009 and played for the franchise until 2015. In 2010, Ashwin took 13 crucial wickets and played a key role in CSK’s first IPL title win.
Given his strong connection with the franchise and his familiarity with the Chepauk pitch, a return to CSK could be a great move for both sides. The Chepauk pitch typically favors spinners, and Ashwin, who is well-versed with the conditions, could have a significant impact. Having played much of his age-group cricket there, CSK’s decision to bring him back would be a sensible one.
#2 Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants are another team that might target Ashwin, as they aim to secure their first IPL title in 2025. With the release of their captain KL Rahul, LSG will be searching for a new leader, and Ashwin could be a strong contender.
The Ekana Stadium pitch in Lucknow is known to be one of the most spin-friendly in the IPL, making Ashwin an ideal pick for the team. He can also serve as a floater in the batting order. With Ravi Bishnoi retained, Ashwin could form a formidable partnership with the leg-spinner.
#1 Mumbai Indians
The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians, have lacked a top-tier spinner in recent years, and Ashwin’s experience could be a valuable addition. MI won consecutive titles in 2019 and 2020, but since then, their performance has declined, and Ashwin’s inclusion could bring stability to their bowling attack.
In the past, MI has relied on two overseas seamers alongside Jasprit Bumrah, making the role of Indian spinners crucial. Ashwin could help control the run rate in the middle overs and pick up key wickets. Beyond his bowling, Ashwin has improved his batting, particularly in T20s, and could be a great fit for MI in the upcoming season.
