Team India have suffered a major setback as star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been reportedly ruled out of the T20 World Cup in Australia, starting next month. The ace pacer has been struggling with a stiff back, which will keep him out of action for almost four-six weeks.
Before Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was also ruled out of the World Cup due to injury. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Indian team players have missed an ICC tournament due to injury.
On that note, let’s take a look at five Team India players who missed World Cup campaigns due to injuries.
#1 Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah was perhaps India’s most important player for the T20 World Cup. India were considered a strong team due to Bumrah’s presence in the death overs. However, he has been troubled by a stiff back of late.
He missed the entire Asia Cup 2022 and returned during the recently concluded series against Australia. He played the last two T20Is and looked completely of colour. He missed the first T20I against South Africa and is likely to be ruled out of the T20 World Cup as well.
Bumrah’s injury is a big blow for the team, and now India will have to look for a bowler who can bowl in the death overs.
#2 Ravindra Jadeja
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been an integral part of India’s squad across formats in recent times. Jadeja’s improvement in his batting in the past few years has been very beneficial for the Indian team.
However, the Saurashtra-born all-rounder suffered a freakish injury during the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022. It will take a long time for Jadeja to recover from the injury sustained in the Asia Cup and the team will definitely miss him.
#3 Virender Sehwag
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag was ruled out of two T20 World Cups due to injuries. Sehwag left for England with the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2009, but there was always a question mark on his fitness.
Sehwag’s fitness woes came in between and he was ruled out of the competition. Later Dinesh Karthik replaced Sehwag for that World Cup. The Delhi-born batter was also unable to play in the 2010 T20 World Cup due to injury and Murali Vijay replaced him in that team.
#4 Ishant Sharma
It was during the 2015 ODI World Cup that Ishant Sharma got his chance to turn his ODI career around. Despite bursting onto the scene as an all-format bowler, Ishant was considered as a Test specialist and was an integral part of the Test side during Virat Kohli’s reign as captain.
Meanwhile, everyone was surprised by the inclusion of Ishant in the ODI team ahead of the ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Ishant was excited about the World Cup. But seven days before the start, Ishant got injured and had to miss the World Cup.
#5 Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey’s international career has been a talking point for many cricket experts. He has been largely inconsistent with the bat and has been in and out of Team India.
But the most tragic incident for this star batsman from Karnataka was the injury before the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. Manish was included in the Virat Kohli-led Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. However, due to injury, he lost his place in the team.
Manish Pandey never managed to return to the Indian side despite his immense success in IPL and domestic cricket.
