Gaikwad flourished in the last three matches for Chennai Super Kings last season, In two of those games, he won the Man of the Match award scoring back to back fifties. He played just six games for the franchise last season. However, this season with Shane Watson retired he has a shot at playing a full season and consistently opening the batting for the side or bat in the top three. He will face competition from the experienced Robin Uthappa who also was traded by the franchise who was in search of an experienced Indian opener. The 24-year-old from Maharashtra has a stellar record in T20 cricket with an average of 33.55 and strike rate of 130.69.
